This week is a very special episode with Beverley Coghlan. Bev bravely shares her personal story with vaginal health and through this highlights some of the misconceptions, dismissals, and lack of understanding that many women face and are facing with regards to their vaginal health. This is a sad, but deeply inspiring and uplifting story which proves that with proper understanding, there is no need for women to consistently put up with uncomfortable symptoms, pain, and so much more.
When Bev first went to the doctor’s with uncomfortable symptoms, she never thought that her journey would last multiple years, cost her thousands of pounds, and have a severe mental toll on both her and her family. Bev’s story sheds a light on so many things, including the need to move away from treating poor vaginal health simply as either BV or thrush, and the need to provide a space in healthcare when women are actually listened to. Every vaginal microbiome is different, and the over-willingness to simply prescribe antibiotics or other drugs as a ‘quick fix’ can often do more harm than good, as seen in Bev’s case.
Despite going through such a difficult time, Bev offers a beacon of hope for those going through anything similar, with her perseverance and positivity being an inspiration to us all. She proudly details how she has managed to finally take back control of her own vaginal health and get the answers she so deserved. By tirelessly dedicating herself to learning more and understanding her own body, Bev was able to test her full microbiome and get the answers that she needed. She then was able to make the necessary lifestyle changes to rebalance her vaginal microbiome and minimise her symptoms – something which she often thought would be impossible.
On an individual level Bev is a truly inspirational woman who has managed to get through a terribly difficult time. She now wants to share her story to show others that there is hope, and there can be a light at the end of the tunnel.
