The vagina is a wonder of nature, self-cleaning and equipped with its defence mechanisms. Central to its wellbeing is the pH level, a measure of acidity or alkalinity. Typically, the vaginal pH ranges around 3.8 to 5.0, maintaining an acidic environment. This acidity acts as a shield against infections by preventing harmful bacteria from developing. Any imbalance in pH, either towards excessive acidity or alkalinity, can disrupt this protective barrier, leading to various discomforts and infections.

Maintaining a healthy vaginal pH involves adopting habits that support its natural balance. It is important to avoid harsh chemicals or scented products in the intimate area, and to wear breathable cotton underwear. Additionally, practising safe sex and discussing sexual health openly with partners are crucial steps in safeguarding the delicate pH equilibrium.

An imbalance in vaginal pH often occurs through symptoms such as unusual discharge, itching, burning sensations, or a unpleasant odour. These signs might indicate an infection or an alteration in the natural balance of the vagina. Ignoring these signals can make the issue worse, potentially leading to more severe complications.
