NEW ARTICLE SUMMARY:
Vaginal lactobacilli produce anti-inflammatory β-carboline compounds
Published: October 2024
What was studied?
This study investigated the species Lactobacillus crispatus and its role in the vaginal microbiome.
This was done by isolating some of the chemicals produced by this species, and then testing the impact of these chemicals on inflammation.
Lactobacillus crispatus‘ anti-inflammatory role
The study found that Lactobacillus crispatus, produces a family of chemicals called beta-carboline alkaloids.
There are 9 members of this family, and 6 of these have been shown to be able to reduce inflammation.
Role of beta-carbolines
The researchers also analysed the vaginal fluids of different individuals.
Those with healthy vaginal microbiomes were more likely to have these beta-carbolines present, in comparison to those who suffered with BV.
Treatment implications
This work provides great insight into some of the ways that bacteria in the microbiome can support a healthy vaginal environment.
Further research may help to determine different treatment and management options for those who are struggling with concerns like recurrent BV.
With antibiotics being the current default approach, (despite lack of efficacy and increasing antibiotic resistance) such research may prove vital in creating better, more sustainable options.
