What is it?
DIV is a form of vaginitis. This includes symptoms such as inflammation, dryness, itchiness, large amounts of discharge, painful sex and other uncomfortable vaginal symptoms. DIV is seen as the further progression of AV (aerobic vaginitis) – for more info on what this is then check our other blog on this here!
Is it an infection?
No – DIV is not an infection. DIV is caused by inflammation and irritation.
DIV is often confused with being an STI, as it presents many of the same symptoms. This is why it is really important to first rule out an STI by speaking to your healthcare provider or ordering a sexual health test.
Symptoms of DIV?
These include:
- Yellow/ green discharge
- Inflammation, irritation, itchiness of your vulval and vaginal areas
- Pain during sex or bleeding following sex
How do I get DIV?
Anyone with a vagina can get DIV, although it is particularly common if you are nearing menopause. It is not known exactly why some individuals get DIV and others do not.
How can I treat DIV?
Once you have ruled out an STI, your healthcare professional will most likely recommend a steroid or antibiotic medication to insert vaginally.
However, many experience persistent symptoms with DIV, and therefore it can really help to practise good vaginal health and hygiene practises such as:
- Avoiding wearing tight gym leggings for long periods
- Washing with water
- Avoiding products with harsh chemicals, BPAs, perfumes, or other irritants
- Wearing cotton underwear
- Eating a vaginally friendly diet
