The trichomonas vaginalis parasite can cause Trichomoniasis, which is a sexually transmitted infection. This is the most common STI which is nonviral.

How do I get it?

This is a sexually transmitted parasite, so is transmitted if you have sex without a condom. This is NOT thought to be transmitted via oral or anal sex, or through kissing, sharing cutlery.

The presence of this parasite cause the disease, Trichomoniasis.

So what can it result in?

Trichomoniasis can cause a range of different symptoms including

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
    • this could mean many different things such as a yellow/green colour, thickening of discharge, an unpleasant smell
  • Itchiness around the vagina & vulva, or head of the penis
  • Soreness
  • Swelling
  • Pain during sex or when urinating
  • *If you are pregnant – Preterm birth

However, 70% of those with trichomoniasis have no symptoms! This means that it is often not treated, which can have negative future health implications, as well as meaning it is passed on more often.

Research has discovered that this infection can increase risk of other STIs, infection or viruses, and has even been associated with cancer.

Can I get rid of Trichomoniasis?
